Agartala, 5th February 2024 :   Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb has urged the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to expedite the approval of the new instrument landing system (ILS) at the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala. He said that the new system would enable aircraft to land safely even in bad weather conditions.

Deb, who raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha, said that the MBB airport is an instrument flight rules (IFR) airport, where aircraft use ILS procedures to take off and land. He said that the old ILS system at the airport has been replaced with a new upgraded one, which has undergone ground and air calibration by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) on 27 November 2023.

However, the new system is yet to be operationalized, pending the approval of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Dev cited the statistics of flight cancellations at the airport due to poor visibility in December 2023 and January 2024, and said that the passengers and the airlines are suffering from inconvenience and financial losses. He requested the ministry to consider the matter on a priority basis and grant the approval for the new ILS system at the MBB airport.
