Agartala, 21st February 2024:  Priya Sarkar, a housewife from Kanchanmala Bazar area, who had been missing since February 17, returned home on Wednesday. She alleged that her husband Abhijit Das and his mother had tortured her for dowry and forced her to leave their house in Pandavpur. She also claimed that she had been wandering around without any shelter or food for the past three days.

Priya, who is the daughter of Saraswati Sarkar, a resident of Golaghati Assembly constituency, had married Abhijit, a resident of Kamalasagar Assembly constituency, five years ago in a social ceremony. She said that her husband and his mother had been demanding more money and valuables from her family ever since their marriage. She said that they had beaten her up and thrown her out of their house on February 17, when she refused to comply with their demands.

Priya’s husband had reported her missing to his mother, who then informed Priya’s family. Both the families had searched for her in vain and had filed a missing diary at the Amtali police station. Priya said that she had managed to reach her father’s house on Friday with the help of some kind strangers. She then lodged a complaint against her husband and his mother at the same police station, accusing them of domestic violence and dowry harassment.

The police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Dowry Prohibition Act. They have also detained Abhijit and his mother for interrogation. Priya has been sent for medical examination and counselling.
