Agartala, 17th May 2024:  In a dramatic turn of events, an attempted abduction of a minor girl was thwarted, leading to the arrest of two young men and highlighting ongoing concerns about child marriage in the region.

The minor, who was recently married to Swapan Mia of Boxanagar, had been under the care of Child Line following a raid at Mia’s house on Thursday by Kalamchoura police. The authorities had not found the minor during the raid but instructed her guardians to present her at the Child Line office in Bishalgarh the following day.

Today the minor was taken to Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital for a routine physical examination. During this time, Sohail Hossain, a youth from Sonamura reportedly in a romantic relationship with the minor, attempted to intercept the minor. He, along with a friend, allegedly tried to block the auto-rickshaw transporting her.

The situation escalated quickly as Swapan Mia intervened. In the ensuing altercation, Mia reportedly struck Hossain, causing a severe head injury. The commotion led to the immediate involvement of the Bishalgarh Women Police Station, and both Hossain and his accomplice were detained at the hospital.

Child Line has filed a formal complaint against the Kazi (Islamic officiant) who facilitated the illegal marriage of the minor, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to addressing child marriage. The minor has since been placed in protective custody.
