Agartala, 12th June 2024: A tragic accident took place near Shanicherra Bazar on Wednesday morning when a cement-laden lorry dashed a schoolgirl. The incident took place as she was on her way to school with friends. The lorry bearing the registration number AS01FC-6555 dashed the girl around 8 AM.
According to eyewitnesses, five students were walking to school together. Three were walking in front, while two lagged behind. One of the students identified as Rumana Begum of class IX had entered a shop to buy school notebooks. When she came out from the shop, the lorry dashed her leaving critically injured.
“Rumana was just coming out of the shop when the lorry hit her,” said an onlooker. “It was a horrifying scene.”
Rumana’s father Harij Ali is a day laborer by profession rushed to the scene upon hearing the news and immediately took his daughter to the Shanicherra Primary Health Center. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was subsequently referred to North District Hospital in Dharmanagar on the advice of doctors.
“She was vomiting uncontrollably and we were very worried,” said Harij Ali. “We hope she recovers soon.”
Rumana, who lives in Ward No. 5 of Shanicherra is currently in critical condition and battling for her life. Her parents are distraught and anxious for any sign of improvement.
The Churaibari Police Station contacted Dharmanagar Police Station, leading to the interception of the lorry at Dharmanagar. However, the driver had fled the scene and remains at large.
“The driver is currently absconding,” confirmed a police official. “We are actively searching for him and investigating the circumstances of the accident.”
Rumana’s condition remains precarious, and the community is rallying around her family in this difficult time. “We’re all praying for her recovery,” said a family friend.
