Agartala, 1st July 2024:   Heavy downpours led to severe landslides bringing traffic to a complete halt on the Nutanbazar-Amarpur road on Monday morning. Multiple sections of the main road from Nutanbazar’s Jharjharia to Chelagangmukh were severely damaged with portions collapsing under the relentless rainfall.

Fallen trees compounded the situation, creating significant roadblocks and leaving many vehicles stranded on both sides. Commuters, including vehicle drivers faced severe disruptions in their daily routines. Complaints were swiftly lodged with the sub-divisional administration, but officials cited ongoing heavy rains as a reason for their delayed response in clearing the landslides.

The inclement weather which began on Sunday night has had widespread effects across the state impacting villages and hilly areas alike. The persistent rain has caused mountain collapses leading to the closure of several roads and leaving vehicles trapped.

Local residents expressed concerns over the lack of prompt action by the sub-divisional administration, fearing substantial hardships for the general populace. A critical worry is the potential obstruction of ambulance services, particularly for patients needing urgent transfer to GB Hospital from remote areas like Jatanbari, Shilachari, Karbook, following the blockage of Amarpur and Nutan Bazar roads.

Responding to the public outcry, the sub-divisional administration eventually deployed dredgers to clear the debris after a three-hour delay. Gradually, normal traffic resumed, bringing much-needed relief to the stranded commuters.
