Agartala, 14th July 2024: Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha visited the charred remains of the party office in Gomati district on Sunday, condemning the recent violence attributed to BJP-backed miscreants. The office was set ablaze last Friday, resulting in the loss of valuable equipment, including a computer, while the local police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident.
“There is no conducive environment for three-tier panchayat elections in this state,” Saha asserted during his visit. He criticized the ruling BJP, claiming that the upcoming elections are being undermined by a “climate of terror” intended to turn the democratic process into a farce. He pointed to a recent attack on CPIM party candidate Badal Shil, who was killed in an alleged assault by BJP supporters at Belonia, as a particularly egregious example of this violence.
Saha also detailed incidents of aggression directed at opposition party members during an all-party meeting in the BDO room at Tepania RD Block in Udaipur stating, “BJP seeks to manipulate the elections through fear mongering to secure votes.”
Despite raising these concerns with both the State Election Commission and the Police Director General, Saha lamented, “No action has been taken.” He urged the Chief Minister to ensure a proactive approach to curbing this rising tide of violence.
Accompanied by Gomati district president Titon Pal and other party leaders, Saha took the time to speak with local party members about their roles in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of unity and resilience in the face of intimidation.
