Potato and onion to be sold through counters opened amid soaring prices in Agartala

Agartala, 15th July 2024 :   In a bid to tackle the escalating prices of essential commodities, including potatoes and onions, dramatic counters have been set up in five ration shops across Agartala, including Maharajganj Bazar. The move comes as dishonest traders continue to exploit market conditions, creating an artificial crisis since the onset of the monsoon season. Officials from the Department of Food, Public Procurement, and Consumer Interest are closely monitoring the situation.

Despite these efforts, the cost of light onions remains stubbornly high, leaving consumers struggling to afford basic necessities. Potatoes are now selling at an exorbitant rate of Rs 40-45 per kilogram in various markets within Agartala city, while onions command a price of Rs 45-50 per kilogram. Prices are even steeper in markets outside the city.

Manik Lal Das, the president of the Maharajganj Bazar Wholesale Merchants Association officially inaugurated the potato and onion counters. Speaking at the launch, he emphasized the need to bring prices under control. “Potatoes will be sold at Rs 33 per kilogram, and onions at Rs 42 per kilogram,” declared Das. The counters will remain operational until the situation stabilizes.

However, critics argue that such measures have failed in the past. Onion sales through ration shops have been attempted previously, yielding limited success. Despite the challenges, the administration remains committed to protecting the interests of both consumers and traders. The encroachment team from the Sadar Subdivision Administration continues to monitor the market closely, ensuring transparency and accountability.
