Agartala, 25th July 2024:  BJP President Rajib Bhattacharya announced on Thursday that the party won 71% of seats in the three-tier Panchayat elections uncontested. This achievement was attributed to the opposition’s inability to field candidates due to organizational challenges and issues.

In a press briefing, Bhattacharya explained that the Panchayat elections are scheduled for August 8, with results to be declared on August 12. He detailed that out of 6,370 seats in 605 Gram Panchayats, 4,704 were won uncontested, while elections will be held for 1,666 seats. In the 35 Panchayat Samitis, 244 out of 423 seats were won uncontested, with elections pending for 179 seats. For the 116 Zila Parishad seats, around 20 were won uncontested, leaving 96 seats to be contested.

Bhattacharya highlighted that the BJP had victories in 409 Gram Panchayats and 20 Panchayat Samitis. He attributed the party’s success to the perceived effectiveness of the “double engine” government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, which has focused on the welfare of citizens through initiatives such as providing over 400,000 pucca houses, clean drinking water, toilets, and social pensions.

Criticizing the opposition, Bhattacharya claimed they failed to contest the elections due to their organizational deficiencies, leading to unfounded accusations against the BJP. He asserted that the opposition parties, like CPIM and Congress, have historically neglected the welfare of the poor, unlike the BJP, which prioritizes development for all.
