Agartala, 1st August 2024:  The NIT campus was once again the scene of intense student protests following the tragic death of Abhijit Panda, a student from Triple IT, who reportedly succumbed to medical negligence on Thursday morning. The students are alleging that the medical services at the NIT Hospital failed to address Abhijit’s condition adequately, leading to his untimely demise.

Abhijit Panda’s death has sparked a wave of outrage among his peers. According to reports, Abhijit fell seriously ill and was taken to NIT Hospital by his friends. However, students claim that the hospital did not provide the necessary treatment, forcing Abhijit to return to his home state. Tragically, he died of heart complications soon after.

As the news of Abhijit’s death spread through the NIT hostel premises on Wednesday night, protests erupted and continued into Thursday morning. The protesters, including members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), demanded accountability and immediate action against those responsible for the alleged negligence.

A protesting student, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “Abhijit’s death is a direct result of the incompetence and negligence at the NIT Hospital. This is not an isolated incident; the medical services here have been subpar for a long time. We demand justice for Abhijit.”

The situation escalated quickly, prompting hostel authorities and the police to intervene. It took nearly an hour for the authorities to bring the situation under control. Despite their efforts, the anger and grief among the students remained palpable.

In response to the growing unrest, NIT authorities have assured the formation of an inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Abhijit Panda’s death. They have promised a thorough investigation to address the students’ concerns.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Abhijit Panda. An inquiry committee will be formed immediately to investigate the matter thoroughly. We assure the students that necessary actions will be taken based on the findings,” said an NIT spokesperson.

However, NSUI leader Rajesh Singh warned, “If the authorities fail to conduct a fair investigation and take appropriate action, we will escalate our protests. The students deserve better medical services and accountability from the administration.”

The protests have brought to light the longstanding issues with the medical services at NIT Hospital, as students continue to voice their dissatisfaction with the quality of care provided. The situation remains tense as the student community awaits the promised investigation and subsequent actions.
