Agartala, 3rd August 2024: In the Lembutli and Gayram Cobra Para of Dhariathal Village, residents are grappling with a severe fever outbreak. Over the past one and a half to two weeks, nearly every household has been affected with multiple members falling ill. Despite the community’s cries for help, there has been a conspicuous absence of health camps or medical aid in the village.
Villagers report that when they seek hospital care, they are turned away due to overcrowded facilities. “The hospital staff refuses to admit us because there is simply no room,” says one frustrated resident. Instead, patients are given medication and sent back home, but many see little to no improvement even after a week.
This dire situation has left many households in crisis. With entire families bedridden, there is often no one to seek further medical help or bring back necessary medications. The lack of response from health workers has fueled fears that the outbreak might be dengue, given the persistent and severe nature of the symptoms.
Adding to the villagers’ woes is the apparent indifference from local representatives. Despite the widespread illness, community leaders and legislators have remained conspicuously silent, continuing their routines unaffected. “It’s disheartening to see our representatives drive around in luxury cars while we suffer,” laments a villager.
The health department’s inaction has drawn significant criticism, with many hoping that the publication of these events will prompt a swift response to alleviate the crisis in Dhariathal Village.
