BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 21st August 2024:  The northeastern state of Tripura is grappling with one of its worst flood crises in recent history, with relentless heavy rainfall displacing more than 32,000 people and leaving nine dead. The floodwaters have inundated vast areas, triggering widespread destruction of homes and critical infrastructure, as authorities race to provide relief to affected communities.

With rivers like the Howrah, Feni, Gomati, and Manu breaching critical danger levels, large swathes of land remain underwater. The State Emergency Operation Centre reports that over 6,259 families have been uprooted, forcing them to seek refuge in 331 makeshift relief camps set up across eight districts. Among the hardest hit are West District, Khowai District, and Sepahijala District, where the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert, forecasting further downpours that may worsen the situation.

The calamity has already damaged 887 homes, 17 of which have been completely destroyed. Communities are mourning the loss of life, with victims including a four-year-old boy from West Koroimura in West District, who drowned in floodwaters, and a woman in Sepahijala District who perished when her mud house collapsed due to the rain. Rescue teams are still searching for two missing people.

As Tripura battles the ongoing deluge, the government is working around the clock to manage evacuation efforts, distribute essential supplies, and monitor river levels to mitigate further disasters. However, with more rain forecasted, officials are urging caution, as several rivers remain dangerously swollen.
