Agartala, 4th October 2024:  A housewife Morjina Khatun of Aralia village in Charilam was allegedly poisoned by her in-laws. Despite a case being lodged at the Bishalgarh Women’s Police Station, no arrests have been made raising concerns about police inaction.

According to Nargis Begum, Morjina’s mother, “My daughter was married to Mukesh Nabi in 2014. Initially, everything was fine, but soon, the demands for money began.” Morjina’s family claims they gave Rs 50,000 to her in-laws, hoping to ensure her happiness. However, the demands and abuse allegedly resumed after a brief respite.

On the night of September 21, Morjina was reportedly beaten and confined with her face tied. The following day, her in-laws allegedly forced poison down her throat. “We rushed her to Bishalgarh sub-divisional hospital. Her condition was so severe that she had to be referred to Tripura Medical College and Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital at Hapania,” said Farooq Islam, Morjina’s brother.

Despite the severity of the allegations, Farooq Islam lamented, “We filed a case naming five people, but the police have not arrested anyone yet.”
