Agartala, 7th October 2024: Another tragic road accident has left a scar on the 39 Mile area of Atharamura Hills under Mungiakami Police Station. On Monday at around 10:30 AM, a 13-year-old schoolgirl standing by the roadside was crushed to death by a super bus from Assam bearing the registration number AS01NC-1128.
The incident took place when the super bus en route from Chandrapur in Agartala to Assam lost control while trying to avoid a massive pothole on the national highway. The sudden braking caused the bus to veer off the road directly hitting the young girl and injuring two others.
Emergency services were immediately notified, and the Teliamura fire brigade rushed to the scene. Despite their swift response, the girl remained trapped under the bus for over an hour. With the help of local residents, the fire brigade managed to extricate her lifeless body using a driller and a cutter.
The injured and the deceased were taken to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, where the attending doctor declared the girl dead on arrival. The other two injured individuals are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The sudden death of the young girl has cast a pall of gloom over the 39 Mile area of Mungiakami. In response to the incident, local residents blocked the national highway in protest. The blockade was lifted only after the police assured them of strict action against the bus driver and the vehicle was seized.
Later in the day, after the post-mortem, the girl’s body was handed over to her relatives, filling the hospital with the sound of their grief. This tragic accident once again highlights the failure of Tripura’s traffic management system to prevent frequent road accidents across the state.
