Agartala, 20th October 2024:  The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) has announced a week-long statewide protest starting on October 21 to raise concerns about the growing drug menace and to demand the immediate filling of vacant posts in government departments.

In a press conference today, Neel Kamal Saha, President of the Pradesh Youth Congress, revealed the party’s plan to pressure the government to address the vacancies in various sectors. He criticized the government for its inaction, stating that although several departments have vacant posts, no efforts have been made to fill them.

“The government has resorted to outsourcing jobs, ignoring its promise of creating over 50,000 jobs. This has led to rising uncertainty for the state’s youth,” Saha said. He also raised concerns about individuals from outside Tripura allegedly obtaining fake Permanent Resident Certificates (PRTCs) and seizing job opportunities meant for local youths.

Saha further blamed the increasing unemployment and lack of job security for pushing the state’s young generation towards drug addiction. “This government came into power with promises of youth employment, but instead, it has only contributed to the rise in drug abuse among young people,” he added.

Accusing the current administration of failing to address the critical issues of drug abuse and unemployment, Saha announced the Congress’s protest program titled ‘Give Jobs, Not Addiction’. The statewide movement will begin with the Sadar District Congress on October 21 and continue until October 29. If the government does not take effective measures to curb drug addiction and create employment opportunities, the Congress will escalate the movement into a civil disobedience protest in December.

Additionally, Saha criticized the Tripura Police for their inefficiency in tackling drug peddling, emphasizing the need for stricter action.
