Agartala, 15th November 2024:   Residents of Gol Chakkar have taken to the streets blocking roads and burning tyres in protest against the demolition of their houses by the municipal corporation. The locals alleged that the government has failed to make any arrangements for their rehabilitation.

The government initiated the demolition drive to widen the road from Border Gol Chakkar to Joypur resulting in significant financial losses for more than a hundred families.

A local resident explained, “The road widening project has led to the demolition of houses along the road. Now, we have nowhere to go except this house. We are left with no choice but to live under the open sky with our families.”

The affected residents are demanding that the government provide them with proper rehabilitation. “The eviction drive was carried out using bulldozers without any prior arrangements for our relocation. This is unacceptable. We demand that the government make proper arrangements for our rehabilitation,” said another protester.

The protesters have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met. “We will not stop until the government takes action and ensures that we are properly rehabilitated,” declared one of the protest leaders.
