Agartala, 23rd November 2024:   An important meeting was held at the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan here on Saturday organized by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department. The event brought together traders, members of Consumer Clubs, Merchant Associations and Ration Shop Dealers from various markets in the West district. Food Minister Sushanta Chowdhury inaugurated the meeting in presence of Food Director, Sub-Divisional Magistrates from different subdivisions of the West district and other officials.

Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted the purpose of the meeting, stating, “The Food Department has decided to hold district-based discussion meetings with traders and ration shop dealers in all the markets of each district. Today’s meeting is focused on the West District.”

He addressed the issue of artificial shortages of essential food items that occur during disruptions in vehicle movement between Assam and Agartala. “At times, artificial shortages of daily essential food items are created in different places. This often happens when there is a disruption in vehicle movement from Assam to Agartala,” he explained. “Therefore, we have decided to hold such discussion meetings to address these challenges.”

Minister Chowdhury also provided updates on the buffer stock work at Sekerkote. “Eighty percent of the buffer stock work has been completed. We expect to finish the project by next year, ensuring that fuel oil will be available for three to four months even if the roads deteriorate,” he assured.

The meeting aimed to foster better communication and cooperation between the Food Department and local traders to prevent artificial shortages and ensure the steady supply of essential goods. The proactive measures discussed are expected to alleviate future disruptions and benefit the residents of West Tripura.
