Agartala: September 19. CPIM MLA and former minister Ratan Bhowmik on Monday has written a letter to the Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath requesting him to take the initiative to establish a Government General Degree College in Kakaraban under Gomati district instead of the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The statement of the CPIM MLA came two days after state government has announced to set up five new colleges among which two colleges will be setup by PPP Model.

In the letter, Bhowmik said that due to the large number of students of Netaji Mahavidyalaya in Udaipur sub-division and in response to the demands of the people of Udaipur, during the then government decision were taken to set up a second degree college in Udaipur.

“In 2016 various places were identified for setting up a second government degree college in Udaipur under the leadership of the then Chief Minister Manik Sarkar along with the Education Department, PWD, District and Sub-Divisional Officers were there. At the end of the financial year 2016-17, a spot was fixed at Dudhpuskani Gaonsabha in Palatana area. Accordingly, the District Magistrate started preliminary work to hand over the said place to the Education Department”, the letter reads.

He further said that an a question and answer session in the Legislative Assembly in 2018, the Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath mentioned the establishment of a college at that place.

“If the college is established at that place, the students of Udaipur as well as the students of neighboring Belonia in South district and Sonamura in Sepahijala district will benefit and they will get the opportunity of higher education”, the CPIM MLA said.

He further claimed that the government’s current decision to set up the college under PPP model is contrary to the long-standing sentiments of the common people of the area and will create problems for the students of poor families.

“Therefore, it is a request to Education minister to reconsider the said decision and take the initiative to set up a Government General Degree College in Kakaraban instead of the PPP model”, the MLA reads.
