Agartala, 29th November 2024:  In a significant demonstration of their grievances, Bru refugees blocked the national highway in front of Haduklau Para under Ambassa police station on Friday. The protest was staged to press for two key demands: the formation of 13 rehabilitation centers and the allocation of agricultural land to Bru refugees.

The blockade brought traffic to a standstill, causing significant inconvenience to passengers. Eyewitnesses reported that the protest began early in the morning, with a large group of Bru refugees participating. The disruption led to severe traffic congestion and delays, highlighting the urgency of the refugees’ demands.

Upon receiving information about the blockade, a contingent of police officers from Ambassa police station along with Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and a significant force from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation and engage with the protesters.

A five-member delegation representing the Bru refugees submitted a deputation to the sub-district magistrate, outlining their demands. The protesters called for the formation of a separate village committee for the residents of Ambassa Geolchhara and the provision of agricultural land for Bru refugees. “We demand the establishment of 13 rehabilitation centers and the allocation of agricultural land to our community. These are essential for our survival and integration into society,” stated a member of the delegation.

The blockage highlighted the pressing issues faced by the Bru refugees, who have long sought proper rehabilitation and support from the authorities. The refugees’ demands are seen as critical for ensuring their livelihood and socio-economic stability.

In response to the protest, local authorities assured the refugees that their demands would be considered. “We are aware of the grievances of the Bru community and are committed to finding a resolution. The demands for rehabilitation centers and agricultural land will be taken up with the higher authorities for prompt action,” stated a representative from the administration.

The blockade was lifted following the assurance from the authorities, and normal traffic flow resumed.
