Agartala, 9th December 2024:  In a shocking incident, police have arrested a former member of the banned NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura) for his alleged involvement in anti-social activities with arms. The accused, identified as Shankar Debbarma, a resident of Balaram Thakurpara in Champaknagar, was apprehended on Sunday afternoon by the Jirania Police Station team.

Authorities recovered a sharp sword and a country-made gun from his residence. The incident unfolded when Shankar Debbarma reportedly launched a deadly attack on Sushil Debbarma, a fellow villager, during an altercation. According to sources, Shankar had gone to collect donations from workers renovating an old bridge in the village. When Sushil opposed his actions, Shankar allegedly attacked him with a sharp weapon, leaving him seriously injured.

Alert villagers intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further. The injured Sushil was initially rushed to Champaknagar Hospital and later referred to GB Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment. Following the attack, Sushil filed a complaint at the Champaknagar outpost on Sunday night, prompting swift action by the police. Jirania Police raided Shankar’s residence in Balaram Thakurpara and recovered weapons during the search. The Officer-in-Charge of Jirania Police Station informed the media that a case under the Arms Act has been registered against Shankar, who has a history of engaging in unlawful activities even after returning to mainstream life.
