Agartala, 13th December 2024:   The Reang tribes of Shwetrai ADC Village under Kamalpur Durga Chowmuhani RD Block, blocked the Kumarghat-Kamalpur National Highway. The blockade took place on Friday disrupted traffic and prompted a swift response from local authorities.

The tribes have long been grappling with issues such as impassable roads, lack of electricity, and insufficient drinking water. A blockader described the dire situation, saying, “The road to our village has been in a terrible condition for a long time. We have electricity and drinking water problems, especially during the dry season. We used to rely on rainwater, but now even that is not available. Despite numerous complaints, nothing has been done.”

The blockader further highlighted the urgent need for road repairs, noting, “Due to the poor condition of the road, even critically ill patients cannot be taken to the hospital by ambulance. We had no choice but to block the road to make our voices heard.”

Upon learning about the blockade, police forces and officials from Durga Chowmuhani Block and the Electricity Corporation in Kamalpur rushed to the scene. They engaged with the blockaders to understand their grievances. The authorities assured the protestors that their demands would be addressed promptly.

“The road and basic services must be improved immediately,” one official stated, promising swift action to resolve the issues.

With this assurance, the Reang tribes agreed to withdraw the blockade, allowing traffic to resume. The incident has brought to light the urgent need for infrastructure improvements in the area and has put pressure on the administration to act swiftly to address the grievances of the Reang tribes.
