Mumbai bus accident death toll climbs to 8

The death toll in last week’s Mumbai BEST bus accident climbed to eight after one of the injured passed away on Monday morning while receiving treatment at the Sion Hospital, BMC Disaster Control said here.

The victim, identified as Fazlu Rehman (55), was a local resident and was among the 49 injured who sustained serious injury after an electric bus, hired by the civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking on a wet-lease basis, ploughed into a crowd and fatally knocked down seven persons and injured 42 others on a crowded road in the Kurla area on December 9.

Police have arrested driver Sanjay, who is presently in police custody.

Following this, a five-person team was appointed by BEST to probe the incident while the civic body has also announced Rs two lakhs each to the families of those who lost their lives and bear treatment expenses of the injured.
