Agartala, 17th December 2024: The All Tripura Blind Association met with the School Education Department on Tuesday to present an eight-point demand addressing the needs of the visually impaired. The delegation, led by the organization’s general secretary, Mithun Saha, handed over a deputation to N. C. Sharma, Director of the state’s Primary and Secondary Education Department.
“The primary demand is to provide an adequate number of teachers for visually impaired schools. We need both graduate and post-graduate teachers to be appointed immediately,” Saha told the media. The association also emphasized the necessity of providing Braille books for both students and teachers, aligned with the curriculum.
The association stressed the importance of a five-day training program to enhance teachers’ efficiency. Additionally, they highlighted the need to ensure the implementation of a four percent reservation policy in the recruitment and promotion of the visually impaired, which they claim has not been followed rigorously.
“Ramps and special toilets for the visually impaired should be installed in various offices and courts,” Saha added. Another significant demand was the appointment of an officer specifically tasked with addressing the various issues faced by the visually impaired.
The meeting highlighted the association’s commitment to advocating for the rights and needs of the visually impaired community in Tripura, urging the government to take immediate action on these crucial issues.
