Agartala, 28th February 2025:   Leader of Opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Chaudhury, on Friday, strongly criticized the BJP-led state government for the demolition of illegally occupied shops in Agartala’s Lake Chowmuhani Market, calling the move “inhumane” and “cruel.”

Following a visit to the market, the CPIM leader condemned the eviction, emphasizing that it targeted small traders struggling to make ends meet.

“These traders are poor people trying to sustain their livelihoods. Instead of providing them with alternatives, the government is using force against them, which is undemocratic. They speak of Vikshit Bharat and good governance, but what do these terms truly mean if the authorities fail to ensure the basic needs of their people?” Chaudhury questioned.

He further pointed out that similar issues persist across multiple markets in Tripura, where people are forced to occupy government land to run small businesses due to a lack of proper opportunities.  “Many of these traders are educated individuals with degrees, but circumstances have compelled them to sell fish, fruits, and vegetables. This is the direct result of the government’s failure to provide adequate employment and business infrastructure. The state must take responsibility for ensuring their livelihoods,” he asserted.

While acknowledging the necessity of market development for economic growth, the opposition leader criticized the eviction process, stating that the administration did not give traders enough time to find alternative arrangements.  “The government claims to have issued notices and announcements, but is that enough? Many of these traders have been running their businesses for years—how can they suddenly relocate within such a short span? The administration should have engaged with them and sought a resolution instead of resorting to force. We will bring up this issue in the Assembly session,” Chaudhury added.
