Agartala, 18th April 2025: Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar on Friday issued a stern warning against any attempts to obstruct public development projects, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated. Speaking during an inspection of the cover drain construction from IGM Chowmuhani to Orient Chowmuhani under the Agartala Smart City initiative, the Mayor declared that legal action would be taken against those who hinder progress, regardless of their influence.
“The obstruction of the people’s development work by influential individuals will not be tolerated. If anyone tries to assert themselves and obstruct government work, no matter how powerful they are, the government will not ignore them. We will be forced to take legal action,” Majumdar stated firmly.
The Mayor’s remarks came amidst allegations that former Chief Minister Samir Ranjan Barman and his family were attempting to impede the construction of the cover drain. According to Majumdar, the project aims to mitigate the city’s vulnerability to natural disasters, has faced resistance from the former Chief Minister. “It is surprising and disappointing that someone of his stature would obstruct such a crucial initiative,” Majumdar remarked.
He further alleged that Barman had previously prevented engineers from carrying out their work on the project. “Several days back, engineers were not allowed to proceed with their tasks due to interference,” the Mayor claimed. In response, Majumdar personally visited the construction site to ensure the project’s progress and to address the issue directly.
The cover drain project, a key component of the Agartala Smart City initiative, has been underway for some time and is seen as a vital step in safeguarding the city from flooding and other natural calamities. Majumdar reiterated the corporation’s commitment to completing the project despite challenges. “This initiative is for the welfare of the people and the future of our city. We will not let anyone derail it,” he asserted.
