Agartala, 10th May 2025: Allegations of elder abuse have once again surfaced in the Kanchanmala area under Golaghati assembly constituency raising concerns about the community’s silence in the face of repeated incidents. Despite multiple reports in various media outlets, cases of elderly parents suffering at the hands of their own children continue to emerge.
One such case involves Anat Karmakar, an elderly worker from Kanchanmala, who claims he has been neglected and mistreated by three of his four sons. “I thought my children would take care of me in my old age, but I was mistaken,” Karmakar said today sharing his grievances with the media personnel.
Karmakar’s distress reportedly escalated after his son Pradip Karmakar allegedly seized control of his rubber plantation—the elderly man’s only source of income. “Not only did he take over my rubber garden, but he also subjected me to mental and physical abuse,” Anat Karmakar alleged.
Although his eldest son Ranjit Karmakar has made occasional efforts to support him, the other three sons have shown no concern for his welfare, he said. “I feel completely abandoned,” Anat Karmakar lamented.
Appealing for intervention, the distressed father has called upon the state Chief Minister to take action. “I do not want another parent in this country to suffer as I have. Strict measures must be taken against those who mistreat their elderly parents,” he urged.
Despite the recurring nature of such cases in Kanchanmala, community members have largely remained silent, failing to address the issue or hold perpetrators accountable.
