Agartala, 17th May 2025 : A high-level delegation from Agartala rushed to Churaibari Police Station to investigate a new smuggling method involving electricity transformers allegedly used to transport cannabis from Tripura to Guwahati. Upon inspection, officials confirmed that these transformers did not belong to the Tripura Electricity Department.
During the operation, authorities seized a vehicle with registration number UP58AT-1128 recovering 960 kg of dry cannabis concealed in ten transformers. The arrested individuals were identified as driver Adresh Kumar Sachchan (42) and co-driver Pramod Kumar (59), both residents of Kanpurnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Several documents were recovered along with the transformers.
Following media reports, top officials from the Tripura Electricity Department including General Manager Swapan Debbarma, Panisagar DGM Debasish Das, and SDO Dipayan Das visited the police station to inspect the seized equipment. Additional Superintendent of Police Jeremiah Darlong and Churaibari Police Station OC Khokan Saha were present during the inspection.
General Manager Debbarma stated that these transformers were neither used for official purposes nor matched the specifications of those employed by the Tripura Electricity Department, suggesting they were specifically designed for smuggling. Furthermore, signatures on recovered documents were deemed fraudulent.
Superintendent of Police Jeremiah Darlong confirmed that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited would submit an official report, reiterating that the seized transformers were not part of their inventory. However, further details were withheld to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation.
Authorities continue to probe this evolving smuggling tactic, underscoring the growing ingenuity of drug traffickers in evading law enforcement.
