Agartala, 1st June 2025: Incessant and heavy rainfall over the past week has left at least 729 people homeless in low-lying areas under Kailashahar Sub-Division in Unakoti District. With flood-like conditions worsening, the district administration has set up 21 shelter homes across the district, including seven in Kailashahar subdivision, to provide temporary refuge to the displaced. Officials said the situation remains critical as the Manu River continues to flow above the danger mark.
Both the district and sub-divisional administrations are on high alert, closely monitoring the water level to prevent breaches in the river embankment, reminiscent of the devastating 2018 floods that crippled the region’s economy. In the last 24 hours, the relentless downpour has triggered severe waterlogging across multiple areas within the Kailashahar Municipal Council. Localities such as Gobindapur, PWD Area, Kalibari Road, and even the town’s commercial hub are submerged under knee-deep water. Floodwaters have entered several homes and shops, intensifying public distress. Residents, especially those near the embankment, are living in fear and spending sleepless nights amid warnings of a possible breach if rainfall continues. The administration has assured all possible measures are being taken to reinforce the embankment and mitigate the impact.
