Agartala, 23rd June 2025: In a major initiative to save lives and ensure timely medical care for road accident victims, Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Sunday announced that the state government will soon launch the ‘Cashless Medical Scheme for Road Accident Victims 2025’. The scheme, spearheaded by the Transport Department, aims to provide immediate treatment to accident victims during the critical “golden hour.”
Addressing the 16th meeting of the State Road Safety Council at the State Secretariat, Minister Chowdhury said the scheme would not only guarantee swift hospitalisation but also extend financial assistance for medical expenses. “Our aim is to ensure that no life is lost due to delays in medical treatment. The scheme will enable victims to receive immediate care at the nearest hospital,” he said.
He underscored that the initiative is rooted in the government’s philosophy of valuing every human life, with the Transport Department aligning all its efforts accordingly.
The meeting also featured a comprehensive review of ongoing road safety programmes, along with a preliminary discussion on the scheme’s implementation strategy. A pictorial presentation of the proposed scheme was delivered by Subrata Chowdhury, Additional Secretary of the Transport Department, who also highlighted other initiatives under the State Road Safety Council.
Emphasizing the need for public participation in accident prevention, the Minister said, “Most road accidents are avoidable. Awareness and caution can significantly reduce such incidents. The department is actively working to build a safety-conscious society.”
Among the department’s key road safety initiatives highlighted were deployment of Interceptor Vehicles with life support systems, regular road safety awareness campaigns, implementation of the Hit and Run Compensation Scheme, the Good Samaritan Scheme encouraging bystander assistance.
Chowdhury also noted that Tripura recorded a 13% decline in road accidents last year. He credited this progress to collaborative efforts by the Transport and Traffic Departments, law enforcement agencies, and alert citizens. “With guidance from the Government of India, we are taking proactive steps to minimise accidents and protect lives,” he added.
The meeting concluded with a collective call to strengthen vigilance and public cooperation in building safer roads across the state.
