Agartala, 25th June 2025: A simmering water crisis in Amtala, under Khilpara Gram Panchayat in Udaipur prompted a protest today as members of women’s group staged a road blockade demanding immediate relief.
For the past three months, residents in the area have grappled with acute water shortages, repeatedly appealing to local Gram Panchayat representatives for resolution. Despite their efforts, no tangible action was taken. Villagers allege that the lone vehicle supplying water has been in disrepair for weeks, compounding the crisis.
In a show of frustration, the women’s group took to the streets in Amtala, calling for regular and sufficient water supply for drinking, cooking, sanitation, and daily use. Eyewitnesses said that local leaders including the area’s Upa-Pradhan rushed to the spot and confronted the protesters, reportedly criticizing them for blocking the road instead of seeking other avenues.
An intense exchange followed between the demonstrators and officials. “We have endured this for too long. How can we survive without water every single day?” a local woman questioned during the standoff.
Villagers also alleged that elected representatives remained absent during the peak of the crisis, failing to ensure even basic water provisions. The blockade was eventually lifted after officials assured residents that regular water supply would be restored promptly.
