Agartala, 25th June 2025: An elderly woman sustained serious injuries after being allegedly assaulted by a neighbor over a long-standing dispute involving livestock trespassing in Dakshin Panisagar Gram Panchayat under Panisagar subdivision.
According to local sources, the incident took place on June 23 at around 3 PM, when 70-year-old Rina Rani Sarkar, a resident of Ward No. 2 and widow of the late Suresh Sarkar attempted to drive away goats that had entered her property and destroyed her homegrown vegetables. The goats reportedly belonged to her neighbor, Nibaran Kapali, with whom Rina has had an ongoing feud for several years.
Rina, who lives alone, alleged that despite repeated complaints, the goats frequently invaded her garden. Matters escalated when, on the afternoon of the incident, Nibaran allegedly assaulted her with a stick. Rina also accused Nibaran’s wife Pushpa Kapali of aiding the attack. She suffered severe head, back and waist injuries, and reportedly lost consciousness at the scene.
Witnesses claim nearby residents refrained from intervening, citing fear of reprisal due to Nibaran’s history of alleged abusive behavior and poor community relations.
The victim’s son, Sridam Sarkar, who resides in Dharmanagar with his family was informed by locals and immediately rushed to take his injured mother to Panisagar Sub-Divisional Hospital. Doctors there provided initial treatment before referring her to North Tripura District Hospital at Dharmanagar for advanced care.
Yesterday, Sridam filed a written complaint with Panisagar Police Station naming both Nibaran and Pushpa Kapali as assailants. Despite the seriousness of the charges and the victim’s critical condition, the complainant claims that no police action had been initiated even after 24 hours.
