Agartala, 26th June 2025: The Nalchar assembly constituency has once again found itself in the spotlight following a series of alarming incidents allegedly involving members of a local group referred to as the “Nigo Mafia.” At the center of the latest controversy is Mohan Das, a mandal leader from Rangamura, who now faces serious allegations of criminal intimidation.
It is reported that Das allegedly threatened to kill Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker and contractor Prasenjit Chowdhury of Poangbari over a dispute related to dropped contract work in the constituency. The confrontation reportedly began on June 14, when Das accompanied by several associates visited Chowdhury’s residence and issued verbal threats. The situation escalated further when Das allegedly made threatening phone calls to Chowdhury the following night, which were overheard by Chowdhury’s wife and minor daughter leaving the family deeply shaken.
In response, Chowdhury has filed a formal complaint with Melaghar Police Station citing threats to his life and safety. The incident has sparked public outrage, especially in light of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha’s recent statement promising strict action against any obstruction by so-called mafia elements in government contracting processes.
This is not the first time Nalchar has witnessed such unrest. Earlier this month, a group allegedly linked to the same network reportedly attempted to abduct a contractor at Aralia, Sonamura only to be repelled by local residents before being escorted away by police.
With mounting evidence and growing public concern, all eyes are now on the state leadership to see whether decisive action will follow.
