Agartala, 2nd September 2026 : Panic gripped the Uttar Bharat Chandranagar Higher Secondary School in Belonia on Wednesday afternoon after 13 Class VII students suddenly fell ill during classes.
According to reports, the affected students include 12 girls and one boy. Several students reportedly complained of breathing difficulties and some lost consciousness during the class. Soon after, more students began showing similar symptoms, including breathing problems, cramps in their hands and legs, and a burning sensation in the chest.
All 13 students were rushed to Belonia Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.
A section of parents alleged that the school authorities did not take prompt steps to shift the students to hospital despite several students falling ill one after another. The alleged delay has led to resentment among some parents. However, after the students were taken to the hospital, the Headmaster and other teachers reportedly reached the hospital to monitor the situation.
Local sources said this is the second such incident reported at the school, raising concerns among parents and school authorities over the recurring nature of the episode.Following the incident, the District Education Officer and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Belonia visited both the school and the hospital. They took stock of the situation and enquired about the treatment being provided to the affected students.
The exact reason behind the sudden illness of multiple students remains unclear. The administration is reportedly looking into the matter to determine the actual cause of the incident.
