Agartala, 13th January 2025: Over the past three years, a total of 2815 Bangladeshi nationals have been apprehended for illegal infiltration, with 1746 of them being deported back to their country. This information was disclosed by Chief Minister and Home Minister Dr Manik Saha on the second day of the 13th Legislative Assembly.
The data was presented in a written response to unstarred questions posed by Tipra Matha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury, and CPM MLA Nayan Sarkar.
Chief Minister Saha provided detailed statistics, stating, “From 2022 to October 31, 2024, we have arrested 2815 Bangladeshi citizens for illegal infiltration. Of these, 1746 individuals have been successfully deported to Bangladesh.”
He further elaborated on the status of the remaining 1069 detainees. “Currently, 474 individuals are in jail custody, 8 are in temporary detention centers, 2 are housed in shelter homes, and 585 have been released on bail as per court orders,” Saha informed the assembly.
The issue of cross-border infiltration remains a significant concern in the region, prompting legislators to raise questions about border security and the rehabilitation of detainees. Emphasizing the state’s commitment to addressing this challenge, the Chief Minister assured, “We are taking every measure to ensure that our borders remain secure and legal procedures are followed diligently.”
