Agartala, 7th August 2025: The Kanchanpur Sessions Court sentenced 36-year-old Baduram Reang of Dwarkhang village under Vangmun police station to three years of imprisonment and fined ₹5,000 under Section 326 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and an additional three years with a ₹5,000 fine under Section 27 of the Arms Act. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in a total imprisonment of three years.
The case stems from a violent altercation on May 8, 2024, between Baduram Reang and his younger brother Thankahalima Reang. The dispute reportedly arose over money owed between the siblings. In a fit of rage, Baduram allegedly opened fire with a country-made gun inside his residence injuring both his brother and their relative Reshmili Reang, daughter of Rajib Kumar Reang.
Eyewitnesses and villagers rushed the injured victims to Kanchanpur Hospital, where they received emergency treatment. Following the incident, Baduram Reang surrendered himself at the Vangmun police station. A case was registered by then Sub-Inspector Sanjib Tripura under IPC Sections 326, 307 and Section 27 of the Arms Act. The firearm used in the attack was seized and later confirmed through forensic testing to have discharged the bullets.
The charge sheet was submitted to the court on October 19, 2024. During the trial, thirteen witnesses testified, leading to the conviction. Sessions Judge Angshuman Debbarma pronounced the sentence, clarifying that although Reang was convicted under two separate legal provisions, the sentences would run concurrently.
“Justice has been served, and the court has taken into account the gravity of the offense while delivering a balanced sentence,” said government prosecutor Partha Pal, who represented the state in the case.
