Agartala, 1st December 2025:     A large-scale operation to destroy illegal cannabis plantations was carried out on Monday under the leadership of Bishramganj Police Station OC Ajit Debbarma. The drive began in the morning and continued until 2 p.m., targeting several areas under Sutar Mura ADC Village, including Toktuma Dhung, Ghatigora, Dhanachar, and Puran Bari.

Police teams, supported by the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), the 11th Battalion, and women personnel, uprooted vast stretches of cannabis fields cultivated by local farmers. According to OC Debbarma, nearly 4 lakh mature cannabis plants were destroyed during the operation, with an estimated market value of ₹20 crore. The plants were cleared from 15 plots belonging to the Forest Department.

Speaking to the media personnel, Debbarma confirmed that similar drives will continue in the coming days. He emphasized that cannabis cultivation is illegal and punishable under law, warning that any cultivator caught will face charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The crackdown follows another late-night raid on Sunday in Amarendra Nagar village, where police destroyed 12,000 cannabis plants. Authorities say the consecutive operations have severely disrupted local cultivators and traders, many of whom had invested heavily—some even taking loans from banks or cooperatives—to sustain the illicit crop.

Debbarma urged farmers to abandon cannabis cultivation and instead grow vegetables and fruits, which are both legal and sustainable. He also noted that last year, cultivators had formed a “Cannabis Protection Committee” to safeguard their plantations, but this year the group has failed to resist police action.

With the harvest season approaching, police believe the raids have struck a major blow to cultivators who were only weeks away from reaping profits. The ongoing campaign has left many growers anxious, as Bishramganj police intensify their crackdown on the illegal trade.
