Agartala, 21st June 2025: A major theft at PM Shri Baidyardighi Class XII School has triggered alarm in Bishalgarh after miscreants looted an estimated Rs 8 lakh worth of goods including 40 newly issued laptops. The incident took place late last night coinciding with International Yoga Day celebrations.
According to school authorities, the break-in was discovered early Saturday morning when students and teachers arrived to participate in Yoga Day activities. They found the collapsible gate, along with classroom, library, and staff room locks, broken. Headmistress Antara Chakma confirmed that cupboards and storage areas had been ransacked. She added, “The thieves are now targeting institutions meant to educate our children. This is a terrifying trend.”
The stolen laptops had recently been provided by the Education department as part of a government initiative to strengthen digital learning infrastructure across rural schools. Their loss has sparked concerns among educators and parents alike about the academic impact on students who relied on them for their studies.
Local authorities, including the SMC chairman and members of the Kasba Gram Panchayat were immediately informed. Bishalgarh police arrived promptly and have launched an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest the culprits may be part of a broader drug-related network, with several locals alleging that drug-dependent youth might be behind the theft.
This is the latest in a string of thefts targeting public institutions in the region, contributing to growing unease among residents. Police have assured that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
