Agartala, 31st October 2025: Authorities in Tripura’s Santirbazar subdivision have seized 50 sacks of government ration rice from a shop owned by Uttam Debnath in the bustling Birchandra Manu market, triggering widespread public outcry.
Acting on a tip-off, officials from the Food Department and Manpathar Outpost Police raided Debnath’s warehouse today. The sacks bore official government logos, confirming they were part of the public distribution system. The rice was immediately confiscated by the Food Department.
Sources indicate that the origin and route of such a large quantity of subsidized rice reaching a private shop are under investigation. The shop owner failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding how the ration rice came into his possession.
This incident follows recent disciplinary actions taken against several ration dealers in the region for alleged irregularities. Officials suspect the seized rice may have been diverted illegally from a licensed ration dealer, and are probing how long this unauthorized trade has been operating.
The Santirbazar Food department has launched a full-scale inquiry to trace the supply chain and determine accountability.
