Agartala, 31st October 2025:  Allegations of rampant illegal gambling and drug activity under police protection have sparked public outrage in Santirbazar, with sources claiming that local police officials are actively facilitating these operations.

According to insider reports, a nightly fee of Rs 25,000 is allegedly being charged by OC Raju Dutta and SDPO Bappi Debbarma to permit underground gambling sessions, particularly the notorious “Jhandi Munda” game. These activities are said to be taking place openly across the subdivision, often under the guise of cultural festivities such as Durga Puja and Diwali.

Further allegations implicate Sub-Inspector Ratan Debnath of Santirbazar Police Station, who is reportedly acting as a cashier for these transactions. Locals claim that illegal gambling dens are being set up daily in various locations, with cash exchanges taking place in broad daylight.

One recent incident involved a reported Rs 20,000 transaction near the Rajapur Lala Mira sub-health centre, where an SPO allegedly granted permission for a gambling event. Although residents alerted the police, two patrol vehicles dispatched from Santirbazar station were allegedly recalled midway on orders from OC Raju Datta.

The situation has reportedly worsened with claims of coordinated operations between police and gambling organizers, leading to widespread addiction and financial ruin among working-class and lower-middle-class families. The rise in theft, domestic disputes and social unrest has prompted citizens to question the integrity of local governance.

Sources within the police station also allege that OC Raju Datta has brokered monthly deals involving illegal cattle transport, with SI Ratan Debnath tasked with collecting payments. Critics argue that the SDPO and OC have turned unlawful gambling into a thriving business by exploiting their positions of power.

Local residents have condemned these activities, warning that the social fabric of Santirbazar is deteriorating. Youths are reportedly falling prey to addiction and criminal behavior, prompting calls for immediate intervention.

As public trust erodes, pressure mounts on the Chief Minister and senior police officials to take decisive action. If no steps are taken, activists from the Rajapur Women’s Action Committee have vowed to launch a fresh anti-drug and anti-gambling campaign, reminiscent of previous grassroots movements.
