Agartala, 4th May 2025: The Tripura government has decided to bring all government buildings under solar power coverage, announced Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Sunday. He stated that a growing number of families in the state are showing interest in adopting solar energy under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
Addressing a press conference, Nath said that the state government is actively promoting solar energy in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.
“For the first time, 70 consumers in Tripura have received a total of Rs 30,902 under the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana after installing rooftop solar systems. The demand is rising steadily. As of May 1, 13,536 families have registered online, with 266 already setting up solar plants. Subsidies have been disbursed to 184 applicants, though many are yet to apply for the benefit,” he said.
He further added that 95 families have availed loans totaling Rs 1.75 crore to install solar units, while 70 consumers are now receiving zero electricity bills after switching to solar power.
“By March 2027, we aim to bring 50,000 households under this scheme. If we achieve this target, we can generate an additional 150 Megawatts of power,” said Nath, emphasizing that Tripura currently has no power shortage. “Our peak demand stands at 370 MW, while we are generating 372 MW.”On the flip side, the minister raised concerns over poor bill payment rates in the state.
“Out of 9,87,838 electricity consumers, only 4,32,045 pay their bills. This means around 60% of consumers are defaulting,” Nath stated. He also highlighted the state’s crackdown on power theft over the past year.“Between April 2024 and April 2025, we registered 1,015 power theft cases. A total of 10,779 illegal hook connections were removed, and fines amounting to Rs 4.19 crore were imposed. We have successfully collected Rs 3.37 crore so far,” he added.
