Agartala, 4th May 2025:  In a heartbreaking incident that has raised serious questions about poverty and child welfare in Tripura, a couple from Katachara village under Simna Assembly Constituency reportedly sold their one-day-old baby girl to another family due to dire financial hardship.

According to local sources, on April 30, Lakshmi Rani Sarkar, wife of Prasenjit Das, gave birth to her fourth child at Katlamara Primary Health Center. The couple, already struggling to raise their three children, claimed they could not afford to care for another.

On the same day, they allegedly handed over the newborn to an unidentified family from Khowai in exchange for money.

While both Prasenjit Das and his wife initially denied the sale, they failed to provide any details or documents regarding the whereabouts of the child. Observers noted suspicious behavior and inconsistencies in their statements. However, Prasenjit’s mother, Basana Das, confirmed that the couple had indeed sold the baby due to their economic condition.

The absence of any formal documentation or legal adoption procedure in the case has further complicated matters. Authorities are yet to trace the baby or the family in Khowai who reportedly took her.

Local child welfare officials have been informed, and an investigation is likely to be initiated to ascertain the facts and ensure the safety of the newborn.

This incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for state intervention in impoverished areas to prevent vulnerable families from resorting to such extreme measures.
