6,000 street children to be rehabilitated in orphanages, says Sushanta Chowdhury

Agartala, August 23, 2022: Aiming to provide right to education and better lifestyle, the council of minister of Tuesday approved a draft policy for rehabilitation of street children across Tripura.

Speaking to reporters here at Civil Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon, ICA minister Sushanta Chowdhury said that the decision of rehabilitating street children in different orphanages run by the state government and NGOs as well has been initiated in a cabinet meeting today and the policy will be implemented within few months.

“It is seen that the children on the streets across the state are engaged in various activities like begging, picking of waste materials, consuming narcotic substances and becoming drug peddlers. In order to provide good livelihood, state government took this draft rehabilitation policy of street children under the Social Welfare and Social Education department”, he added.

Chowdhury said, “This scheme will provide benefits of 6,000 street children. After being shortlisted, these street children will be handed over to government and NGOs run orphanages across the state. However, the Child Welfare Committee will look into the policy’s proper implementation. Government has been providing Rs 2000 monthly stipend to each child and in next few months, Rs 4000 will be given to each child.”

With an objective to make sure that each and every child get equal opportunity to shine in their life, this policy has been drafted under the Social Welfare and Social Education department. He said “Under this policy, government will provide Rs 4,000 montly stipend to each and every child. At present, Rs 2,000 stipend on monthly-basis were given to the children in various orphanage across the state. Every child will get Rs 4,000 as stipend per month.”
