70-year-old sentenced to 20 years for heinous crime against minor in North Tripura district

Agartala, 26th September 2024:   The District and Sessions Judge Angshuman Debbarma of North Tripura district has sentenced Hamid Ali, a 70-year-old resident of Kailashahar to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 under Section 376 of the AB Act for the heinous crime of raping a minor girl. Additionally, Ali received another 20-year sentence and a Rs 20,000 fine under Section 6 of the POSCO Act.

The incident took place on June 4, 2023 in Sakaibari Ward No. 6 involved a six-year-old girl who was lured into the forest by Ali while she was watching soil being dumped. The crime was reported promptly, and the officer at the Women’s police station, with the assistance of Sub-Inspector Sanchita Nath, completed the investigation within a month.

During the trial, 16 witnesses testified leading to the conviction. Judge Debbarma stated, “The severity of the crime and the evidence presented left no room for leniency.” The court also ordered an additional six months of imprisonment if the fines are not paid.

Government lawyer Sudarshan Sharma, who handled the case expressed satisfaction with the verdict emphasizing the importance of justice for the victim and her family.
