94-year old deprived of social allowances under new governance

Agartala, 19th October 2024:   In a poignant reflection on the ongoing development initiatives in Tripura, a 94-year-old resident of Ramnagar village Padma Kumar Debbarma has raised his voice against the government’s approach, stating that the benefits of progress are not reaching the most vulnerable members of society. “All together, all development,” he said, emphasizing the disconnection between government claims and the reality faced by the poor.

Padma Kumar, who resides in the Rampada Para of Charilam block has seen his financial support cut since the change of government, a decision he believes reflects a systemic failure to support those in need. “In their eyes, good governance means only in their families, ministers and mandal leaders,” he lamented, underscoring the sense of exclusion felt by many in similar situations.

For 25 years, Padma Kumar received social allowances during the previous regime, which he relied on as he has lost the ability to work due to his advanced age. “Now, I am forced to stay in bed most of the time, and the pain of scarcity is eating away at me,” he shared, highlighting the dire circumstances he faces without the necessary financial support. He has appealed directly to the Chief Minister for the restoration of his allowance, seeking relief from his struggles.

The issue of allowance cuts affecting the elderly, particularly in rural areas, has been reported across various regions of Tripura. Critics argue that the current government’s bureaucratic policies are depriving helpless individuals of essential support, and the question remains whether any action will be taken to reinstate such vital social safety nets.

Padma Kumar’s plight is emblematic of a broader concern regarding the government’s focus on development that appears to cater to political interests rather than genuine welfare. As he noted, “This so-called development is calculated by thinking of the people in the vote bank,” suggesting a prioritization of electoral strategy over humanitarian needs.

Local residents are increasingly aware of the stark contrast between the government’s lavish expenditures—often involving luxury vehicles and substantial travel costs for bureaucrats and ministers—and the struggles of the average citizen. “People are witnessing that very well,” Padma Kumar asserted, calling for accountability and change. As the government continues to promote its development agenda, the voices of those like Padma Kumar serve as a critical reminder of the work still needed to uplift the most vulnerable in society.
