Agartala, 12th June 2026: The Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM), Tripura Prant, on Friday urged the Government of India to take immediate humanitarian measures over a recent Supreme Court verdict that has raised concerns over the job security of primary school teachers appointed before August 23, 2010.
Addressing a press conference here, the organisation expressed serious concern over the future of thousands of long-serving primary teachers across the country, including Tripura, who may be affected by the judgment.
ABRSM New Delhi Additional General Secretary Professor Arvind Mahato explained that as per the Supreme Court order delivered on May 29, 2026, teachers having more than five years of remaining service are required to clear the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) in accordance with the 2010 notification issued by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). He said the decision has created uncertainty among many teachers who have been serving the education sector for decades.
Highlighting the impact in Tripura, Head Teacher and ABRSM functionary Pranab Mallik said nearly 15,000 teachers in the state could face difficulties due to the sudden development.
Retired Head Teacher and ABRSM functionary Gautam Majumdar said the affected teachers were appointed legally under the rules and qualifications applicable at the time of their recruitment. “These teachers have devoted their entire careers to strengthening the education system. While we respect the Supreme Court, imposing a condition retrospectively raises questions of natural justice and requires sympathetic consideration,” he said.
ABRSM Tripura (Higher Education) President Tirtharam Reang announced a state-wide awareness and protest programme against the verdict. He informed that peaceful sit-in demonstrations will be organised outside all District Magistrate and Collector offices across Tripura on June 18, 2026, at 12 noon.
The organisation will also submit memorandums addressed to the Prime Minister and the Union Education Minister through the respective district administrations, seeking a solution to the issue.
