Agartala, 27th February 2025: The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Thursday conducted a demolition drive in Lake Chowmuhani Bazar targeting temporary shops that were illegally built on the road. The affected traders have expressed their grievances, alleging that the administration carried out the eviction without providing any rehabilitation arrangements.
The incident follows a recent visit by Mayor Dipak Majumdar to Lake Chowmuhani Bazar. During his visit, the Agartala Municipal Corporation had instructed the owners of the illegal shops to vacate their premises. However, the small traders did not comply with the order. Consequently, the AMC proceeded with the demolition of several illegal shops using bulldozers.

The affected traders claim that they have been operating their businesses in Lake Chowmuhani Bazar since the Rajya Sabha period and have never faced such eviction measures before. They argue that the BJP government’s tenure has left them disoriented due to the eviction drive. The traders further allege that the AMC conducted the eviction without making any arrangements for their rehabilitation, resulting in financial losses for several families.
Around Thursday noon, Mayor Majumdar visited Lake Chowmuhani Market in Agartala. He stated that approximately 100 illegal shops were evicted to facilitate the market’s development. Mayor Majumdar assured the traders that new houses would be built for them within the next month. He emphasized that the step was taken in the interest of the people and that necessary arrangements would be made to ensure that ambulances or fire engines could access the market. The mayor urged the traders to support the government and made it clear that no trader would be allowed to occupy space illegally or conduct illegal business. He also mentioned that the administration has various plans to organize the market in an orderly manner.
