Agartala, 30th January 2024: Agartala Press Club, a prestigious institution of journalism in Tripura, marked its 40th anniversary on Tuesday with a grand procession that saw the participation of hundreds of people from the media fraternity and beyond.
The procession was flagged off by veteran journalist Srota Ranjan Khisa, founder secretary of Agartala Press Club Satyabrata Chakraborty, founding members Subal Kumar Dey, Sekhar Datta, Samiran Roy, Samir Pal and Pradip Datta Bhowmik. They were joined by other founder members such as Sanjib Deb, Arun Nath, Fulan Bhattacharjee, as well as Agartala Press Club President Jayanta Bhattacharjee, Managing Committee members, assistant secretaries, journalists, photojournalists, newspaper vendors and media workers.
The procession started from the Agartala Press Club premises at 11:30 am and passed through various landmarks of the city such as Ujjayanta Palace, Kaman Chowmuhani, Post Office Chowmuhani, RMS Chowmuhani, Orient Chowmuhani and ended at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan here. The participants carried banners, placards and flags to celebrate the occasion and express their solidarity with the press club.
The procession was also a cultural extravaganza, as many people sang along to the tune of Rabindra Sangeet, the songs composed by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Some also danced with Baul music, a folk genre of music popular in Bengal and Bangladesh. The atmosphere was festive and joyful, as the procession turned into a meeting of old and new friends.
The Agartala Press Club, which was established in 1984, has been a pioneer in promoting journalism and press freedom in Tripura. It has also been a platform for social and cultural activities, as well as a forum for intellectual discourse and debate. The press club has welcomed everyone to join its 40th anniversary celebrations, which will continue throughout the year with various programs and events.
After the procession, everyone participated in a lunch at the Agartala Press Club, where they shared their memories and experiences of being associated with the press club. The program of the day ended with a call for everyone to participate in the next year’s program, which will be the 41st anniversary of the press club.
