Agartala, 11th August 2026: The Agartala Press Club has strongly objected to remarks made by State BJP General Secretary Chandan Debnath against two morning newspapers, Dainik Sambad and Pratibadi Kalam, describing the statements as “provocative and dangerous” for the safety and freedom of newspapers and journalists.
In a statement, Press Club Secretary Ramakanta Dey said Debnath had allegedly described Dainik Sambad as a “Congress agent” and Pratibadi Kalam and PB24 channel as “CPM agents.” The Press Club termed such allegations unacceptable and said they could have serious consequences for the media fraternity.
According to Dey, Debnath had previously made provocative comments about the media and was subsequently entrusted with the responsibility of State BJP General Secretary. He warned that Debnath could be held responsible for any untoward incident involving journalists or media organisations arising from such statements.
The Press Club said responsible public representatives should refrain from making statements that could create hostility towards newspapers and journalists. It also questioned the appropriateness of making such remarks against established media organisations.
Ramakanta Dey, Secretary of the Agartala Press Club, demanded that Chandan Debnath immediately withdraw his statements and urged all political leaders to maintain restraint while commenting on the media.
