Agartala smart city project under fire after biker injured in unmarked pit

Agartala, 13th November 2025:   What was envisioned as a transformative Smart City initiative in Agartala is now drawing sharp criticism from residents, who say mismanagement and negligence have turned the project into a public hazard.

This morning, a motorcyclist sustained serious injuries after falling into an unmarked pit in the Bhati Abhaynagar Paschim Para area. The pit, dug as part of ongoing Smart City development work, was reportedly left uncovered without any warning signs, barricades, or lighting.

Local residents say this is not an isolated incident. For months, large pits have been left open across various parts of the city, with little to no presence of workers on site. “They dig and disappear,” said one resident. “There’s no accountability, and we’re the ones paying the price.”

The lack of safety measures has not only raised the risk of accidents but also severely disrupted daily movement in affected neighborhoods. Residents allege that the administration has failed to monitor the project effectively, allowing unsafe conditions to persist unchecked.

“This so-called Smart City work has become a source of suffering. There’s no oversight, no urgency to fix what’s clearly dangerous,” said another local.

Locals are now demanding immediate action to cover the hazardous pits and implement proper safety protocols to prevent further accidents.
