Agartala, 16th August 2025:   The Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department is actively exploring the possibility of signing agreements to generate and preserve carbon credits through sustainable agricultural practices.

This was informed by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath while addressing the Mega Organic Mango and Jackfruit Plantation Programme under MOVCDNER Phase IV at Lefunga Agri Sub-Division in Abhicharan Village under the Mohanpur Assembly Constituency today.

On the occasion, the Minister planted a tree, and more than 1,200 mango and pink jackfruit saplings were planted.

“We must work to reduce carbon dioxide emissions; otherwise, coming generations will be in trouble. Many big companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are engaged in modern industries. There are limits for companies to release carbon dioxide, and if they exceed these limits, it harms the environment and atmosphere. To compensate, companies purchase carbon credits by signing MoUs. We are also considering this in Tripura. The Agriculture Department will sign agreements to generate carbon credits and ensure they are preserved in the field,” said the Minister.

He informed that before 2018, Tripura had around 2,000 hectares of organic cultivation land, but this has now increased to 26,500 hectares, engaging over 26,800 farmers.

“Through 53 Farmers Producers’ Companies (FPCs), we are promoting organic farming. We are working for the welfare of farmers, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also stressed. Farmers are like God to us. Our government is providing every possible benefit to make people self-reliant. Today, India is the world’s fourth-largest economy, and 11 countries have adopted our education policy. We should feel proud. To fight global warming caused by rising carbon dioxide, we must plant more trees and preserve carbon in the soil,” the Minister added.

He further suggested planting trees on special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and other ceremonies.

TTAADC Executive Member Runiel Debbarma, Lefunga Block Chairman Ranbir Debbarma, Agriculture Department officials, and others were present at the programme.
