Agartala, 2nd September 2026 : The Government of Tripura has prioritized organic farming as a driver of rural prosperity, and for the first time, a total of 18.7 metric tonnes of organic products were exported to the European market from the state.
This was informed by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath while addressing a Sensitization Programme on the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), held at Pragna Bhaban, Agartala.
“This gathering marks a significant milestone in strengthening Tripura’s organic agriculture ecosystem and connecting our farmers with global markets. Blessed with fertile soil, abundant rainfall, and rich biodiversity, Tripura holds immense potential in organic farming,” said the Minister.
The Agriculture Minister said that Tripura’s farmers have long practiced sustainable methods such as crop rotation, mixed farming, and the use of organic compost.
“Natural pest management techniques, including neem-based formulations, cow dung manure, and biological controls, have preserved soil fertility and protected biodiversity. Today, many farmer groups have successfully integrated traditional wisdom with modern certification standards, ensuring that Tripura’s produce meets international quality benchmarks. Organic farming is not merely a practice; it is a vision for a healthier, sustainable future. With hardworking farmers and supportive institutions, Tripura stands poised to become a beacon of organic excellence in India and beyond,” he said.
He said that in recent years, Tripura has proudly exported several organic products to domestic and international destinations.“Our aromatic rice varieties like Kalikhasa, ginger, scented lemon, bird’s eye chilli, and the world-renowned GI-tagged Queen Pineapple have reached major Indian cities — Delhi, Maharashtra, Bangalore, Gujarat, West Bengal, Guwahati — and international markets including Germany, Dubai, Oman, and Bangladesh,” said the Minister.
Today marks another historic milestone as the Minister flagged off 18.7 metric tonnes of organic aromatic rice (1.2 MT Kalikhasa, 1.5 MT sticky rice, 6 MT black rice, and 10 MT Harinarayan) for the European market through Pratithi Organic Foods Pvt. Ltd.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of our farmers, the support of our institutions, and the growing global demand for Tripura’s organic produce. Over the years, farmers have embraced organic practices in aromatic and sticky rice, ginger, turmeric, bird’s eye chilli, mustard, sesame, foxtail millet, and pineapple (Queen & Kew), supported by schemes such as MOVCDNER and other initiatives,” said the Minister.
The Minister said that during the present government, 26,600 hectares of area is under organic cultivation, out of which 14,411 ha is the total registered area, 2,002 ha of area is under the conversion period, and 10,189 ha of area is under consideration. A total of 53 Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) have been formed, ensuring collective strength and better market linkages.
“The Government of Tripura has prioritized organic farming as a driver of rural prosperity. Through targeted schemes, training, and certification support, we are enabling farmers to diversify into high-value crops with strong global demand. On behalf of the Government of Tripura, I reaffirm our commitment to supporting farmers, empowering producer companies, and strengthening partnerships with exporters, institutions, and global markets,” he added.
During the programme, Chairman, APEDA, Abhishek Dev, IAS; Secretary, Agriculture, Tripura, Apurba Roy, IAS; Secretary, APEDA, Dr. Saswati Bose; Director of Agriculture, Tripura, Dr. Phani Bhusan Jamatia; Mission Director, TSOFDA, Rajib Debbarma; General Manager, NABARD, Tanushri Bhattacharya; and others were present.
